A.J. Alper

A.J. Alper is a US-based artist that hadn’t found his groove after 20 years of painting a wide range of subject matter. He nearly gave up altogether, barely picking up a brush for almost a decade. However, having a deep desire for portraiture that wasn’t fully explored, he started painting random selfies from the Internet for fun and practice and posting the work to his social media accounts. Before long, he grew a large avid following and an ever-increasing demand for his portraits. With his love of the “alla prima” technique of late 19th, early 20th century masters such as John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla that combines expressive brushwork with realistic representation, he is able to capture intimacy and emotion from photographs while enhancing the expressive beauty of the oil paint.
